Parent and Community Involvement
Parent Involvement
As stakeholders, parents and teachers are partners in the development of our children's education. We encourage and support parent visits to the school, conferences and open communication with teachers. Our weekly newsletter, The Crockett Review, is published Wednesday of each week during the school year. The newsletter informs parents of classroom and school-wide activities. (See home page for current issue). Parents are able to access grades through Edline, an online service providing weekly progress reports. Parents can obtain an activation code from the main office.
The Parent, Teacher, Student Organization (PTSO) meets monthly to share ideas and plan events. Parents volunteer in and out of the classroom. Annual events that provide family involvement include Donuts for Dad, Muffins for Mom, Grandparents Day, Mother/Son-Father/Daughter dance, Rip-the-Runway Fashion Show, Soul Food Taste Fest, Science Night, Literacy Night, Open House and Annual Recognition Ceremony for parent volunteers.
Community Involvement
George Crockett Academy depends on the community to provide resources for continued improvement. The school developed interactive learning, mentoring and internship programs with local high schools and universities, including University of Michigan, Eastern Michigan University, Wayne State University, Wayne County Community College, Marygrove College, University Preparatory High School and University of Detroit High School.
The academy enjoys a close working relationship with the Detroit Library main branch and is involved with Mosaic Youth Theatre, Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program, Think Detroit PAL and Mercy Project. Additional community involvement activities include Metro Science Fair, Science Olympiad, Future Cities, Neighborhood clean-up, Career Day and local soup kitchen.
