Mary Lou Van Antwerp • academic administrator

Mary Lou Van Antwerp brings to the Leona Group a strong background in educational leadership and years of proven experience in teaching, mentoring and leadership. She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Detroit in education, a master's degree in educational administration and a master's degree in theology from St. John's Provincial Seminary. Mary Lou taught elementary and middle school for many years before becoming an administrator. She also taught for four years in Bolivia as a missionary. Currently she is completing twelve years as an administrator/mentor and consultant with the Leona Group. Her understanding of the curriculum comes from many years of working in the classroom at different grade levels and serving as a curriculum chair in reading and in math at different times in her career.  Her deep love and concern for a quality education for all children comes from the belief that all children can learn and from witnessing the inequalities in education in the urban setting. The students at George Crockett Academy are her treasures and she treats them as if they were her own children. In the words of the students - "she doesn't play". She has high expectations for staff and students and herself recognizing that we must envision our dreams for them to become reality. Mary Lou has three children and six grand children. She and her husband George have been involved in Detroit for many years. Serving in different roles always with the conviction of "whatever it takes" to empower those who think they are powerless.
