Tamiko Powell-Johnson • dean of discipline

Tamiko Powell-Johnson has been teaching at George Crockett Academy for 8 years. During her first two years she taught technology classes for kindergarten – eighth grade. Middle school classes included animation and web design using HTML. In her third year she developed a proposal to start a visual arts program and is currently the visual arts instructor for 18 classes.  The curriculum is centered on four disciplines that include art history, criticism, aesthetics and production. Activities integrate cross-curricular connections in ELA, math, science and social studies with visual arts as its foundation. Powell-Johnson attended Eastern Kentucky University receiving a bachelor’s of fine arts degree with an emphasis in advertising and a minor in digital media. She worked in and ad agency and graphic design firm prior to teaching. Her goal is to expose students to a variety of processes and techniques that will enhance their creativity and critical thinking skills so that they are not intimidated when faced with challenges.At George Crockett Academy she is on the school improvement team, a lead teacher for middle school and varsity boys and girls track coach.
